driving and when i turn the wheel to the left it gets louder. is this a wheel bearing? i did jack the car up and checked the the wheel for play there isn't any. should i replace the wheel bearing? if so how hard is it to change thanks.I have a 2002 hyundai elantra 125000 mi i have a humming noise coming from the passenger side wheel area when?
You definately have all of the symtoms of a wheel bearing before long you will probably see looseness in the bearing on that side!I have a 2002 hyundai elantra 125000 mi i have a humming noise coming from the passenger side wheel area when?
Good possibility that it is a wheel bearing but if it is you will need the assistance of a front end shop because it is a sealed bearing that is pressed into a hub.Take it to a shop to get it diagnosed first and see what they would charge to replace it.

A Wheel bearing on my car is starting to whine (noticeable when going around corners) My question is?

How long before I have to change it. (in miles) I had heard then CAN rumble on for 1000,s of miles.A Wheel bearing on my car is starting to whine (noticeable when going around corners) My question is?
It would be best to change it now,$300 now is better than $500 later!! When a bearing goes bad it can cause damage to other parts.......A Wheel bearing on my car is starting to whine (noticeable when going around corners) My question is?
might not be wheel bearing.Had sim whine on turn n with help drove in lt/rt circle, set stands under eels 2 let the eels be in rd position. With steer n on a turn and a wheel be n hand rotated, whine come from twisted left ft brake bac n plate scuf n brake rotor.

I wouldn't go too long with a bad bearing...when it seizes up, be prepared to replace the whole drivetrain on that side...A Wheel bearing on my car is starting to whine (noticeable when going around corners) My question is?
NOW.A Wheel bearing on my car is starting to whine (noticeable when going around corners) My question is?
The bearing can make noise for a while, but if it builds up enough heat (noise comes from friction and friction causes heat and damage), the inner and/or outer race can weld itsself to the spindle or carrier. It that were to happen, it turns a not too difficult fix into an ugly and expensive one. Procrastination is not good in this case. On the other end, it can rumble for thousands of miles and slowly disentegrate untill that wheel loses control, which could be fatal.A Wheel bearing on my car is starting to whine (noticeable when going around corners) My question is?
It wont pass an MOT like it because the brakes will fail because of it (thats if you dont kill someone first). I had a loose wheel bearing problem with a previous car and because I left it it welded itself to the hub and I had to pay for both.A Wheel bearing on my car is starting to whine (noticeable when going around corners) My question is?
what you have heard is a complete fluke on there part as some cars can go for miles with problems and others just fail straigh away...

it is entirely up to you whether you want to play that risk but when it does break be prepared for gigantic bill that follows, honestly it is not cheap and when it happened to me i just scrapped the car....A Wheel bearing on my car is starting to whine (noticeable when going around corners) My question is?
Why wait to change it? It won't cure itself and you are risking doing even more damage, or even worse, having an accident due to a bearing failure (at worst, your wheel may seize).A Wheel bearing on my car is starting to whine (noticeable when going around corners) My question is?

  • Wheel bearing 97 Acura cl?

I have a 97 acura CL 2.2 with 100 thousand miles. I recently bought it from someone else so I don't know what has been done and what hasn't. There is a growling noise. It is most noticeable when driving around 20 or 30 miles an hour, but it is noticeable at higher speeds as well. I tried to swerve from side to side to see which side the bearing was on, and the sound doesn't change. Had the car looked at by a couple of mechanics, one checked the wheels for play up and down (12 and 6) and couldn't find much if any.

There is also a clicking noise coming from somewhere when you turn and accelerate. It happens most often when turning left, and sometimes when turning right. Especially when accelerating from a stop and turning left like pulling out onto a road, at about a 45 degree angle.

There isn't any bad vibration, even at freeway speeds. Also it doesnt get better or worse with application of the brakes. I know the back brakes need work, but it doesn't sound like grinding; more of a howling.

I thought halfshafts and wheel bearing. Had firestone diagnose. They said transmission had spun a bearing, and thats where the axel noise was coming from too. I had the transmission rebuilt by a different shop for a lot less money. they said that the bearings in the tranny were good, clutch was burnt up, so rebuilt anyway.

Both the bearing noise, and the clicking noise are back, but at least now my tranny shifts smooth.

What's going on? One halfshaft was fairly new, but I heard a lot of remanufactured halfshafts are junk anyway and fail often. How can i tell which wheel bearing is bad? How can I be sure it's halfshafts? Do wheel bearings sometimes fail and the sound doesn't change when you load or unload the wheels? Help Please!Wheel bearing 97 Acura cl?
ur bearing(hub) is the problem with the bearing noise the half shaft and bearing need to be changed at the same time.halfshaft will get rid of the clicking the bearing will get rid of the noise(change both sides at the same time)

    2002 cavalier wheel bearing?

how do you determin which wheel bearing is making noise? when turning to the right the car is quite, when turning left i get alot of bearing noise, i would hate to change the wrong one.2002 cavalier wheel bearing?
jack it up and shake the wheel. if it is bad it should shake.2002 cavalier wheel bearing?
The only absolute test is to check both sides while the wheels are turning using a mechanics stethoscope.

I have found that 85-90% of the time it will be the bearing on the same side to which you are turning when the noise is loudest, on Front wheel drive cars with integrated double roller bearings which are the most common type. Also note that if you a planning on changing the bearing yourself, know that they are press fit bearings in most applications which means that you will need a press to remove the old and install the new bearing.

How important is a wheel bearing?

i have a wheel bearing passenger side of my s-10 starting to howl. pretty sure its toast. i do small maintenanceon my vehicles, changed a clutch a few years ago on my nissan. can i do this myself without much complication, special tools, and could i mess it upHow important is a wheel bearing?
Not hard to do,but make sure you pack the new bearings with grease.I don't mean rub some grease on them,I mean PACK.If you don't it want be long before they seize and then you will have a problem. How important is a wheel bearing?
I've changed many bearings in my life. If you have decent tools and are not afraid to get the book and follow the directions-go for it.How important is a wheel bearing?

Get a maintenance manual, your tools and have fun.How important is a wheel bearing?
Yes you can do it. Yes you need a tool that will pack the new bearings with grease (easily and cheaply available at your local auto parts store). Yes you can mess it up. ;-) Just be careful not to over-tighten the nut that holds the bearing in.

Oh, and a wheel bearing is important. Actually, it's critical. I had one go bad and I kept driving on it (I was on a trip and in the middle of nowhere.). The wheel caught fire and burned the vehicle to the ground.

Fix it sooner rather than later though. A bad bearing can damage other components.

Why my car wheels squeak when they turn?

95' Ford Contour 5 speed standard

Left wheel bearing needs to be replaced which i cant do cause of that machine. But when the car star moving slowly it squeaks as the wheels turn. I'm already trying to get my bearing replaced next week sometime but i'm wondering does this have to do with something major that will pretty total my car? I cant replace no driveshaft or no engine of any sort. i payed for what i got and the car was 750 dollars used to get me around where i gotta go. Besides maintenance problems on wear and tear like a wheel bearing, the car is actually a steal. But it squeaks but once i start to get up to like a good 10 miles per hour the noise goes away. How can i fix this? I'm only 19 and realized how poor i am so i been fixing my car on my own which has been saving me lots of money. Too bad i cant change the wheel bearing my self on these fordsWhy my car wheels squeak when they turn?
It seems that your wheel bearings are bad.

you neglected to mention the universal joints. (a part of the drive shaft ends. when they go bad they will squeak also but Only when the car is in gear and moving. most don't have a place where you can then grease them, but i have seen replacement universals that came with a grease fitting.

you really should have them checked out. they contain small bearings, when the grease is gone the bearings will rust and possibly fall out. for your own safety have them checked out.

    Audi A4 Wheel Bearing problem...?

I have a 1999 Audi A4 2.8L V6. A couple of days ago weird clicking noise started coming out of my rear passenger side wheel area. I took it to a mechanic today and he told me it was my wheel bearing and that i need to change it? Can someone tell its the wheel bearing and that it has to be changed just by listening to the noise? Do I really have to get it changed? How much would it cost? the mechanic told me it would take 2 1/2 hours to change it. Is that really such a long process? Can you recommend what kind of wheel bearing I should purchase because they would charge me $130 just for the wheel bearing plus labor while Autozone had a wheel bearing for $70.

I might not know much about cars but that doesn't mean that anyone has the right to make fun of me or my questions. If you dont have a helpful answer then dont respond and keep your jokes to yourself. thanks.Audi A4 Wheel Bearing problem...?
You can usually tell what is wrong just by listening to the noise. It could also be the CV Axles that are going bad.

As for time, that is quite long for changing a wheel bearing. A wheel bearing replacement (for one wheel) usually takes from 45min to 1 hr 30 min.

Regrading what bearing brand you should go with, I would suggest http://mibearings.com they have very good bearings (USA made) at very competitive prices. go to their front page, and fill out the form on the right. I would also mention the price quotes you got for the other companies.

I would not suggest Autozone bearings, they could be made in china. Check with the,Audi A4 Wheel Bearing problem...?
I just had my wheel bearing replaced on my Audi Yesterday!

Yup, that is the noise for a bad wheel bearing. But what you need to figure out is if its coming from the Left Rear tire or the Right Rear tire. This will save time and money!

I bought my wheel bearing at www.blauparts.com

It was $45 for the part. With my mechanic, it took him an hour to replace. But of coarse he has been working on Audi's for 20 years so he can move fast! hah

So go to www.blauparts.com and the wheel bearing for the Audi A4 is only around $45.00

    Good luck!

  • Locked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??

When I drive I hear a low rubbing sound within the car that sounds as if it is coming from a wheel. Some people have said it was a wheel bearing going bad because if I change lanes the tone of the rub will change too. I suspect it is a locked up brake caliper. Twice when I took it out of park and put the transmission in reverse, the car seemed to be locked up and then I heard a popping sound like the caliper just broke free. I am wondering if a bad wheel bearing would cause the wheel to lock up and make the same popping sound?? Any clues or advise as to how to determine which is bad?Locked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??
I would say you have a real bad wheel bearing if it is popping like you say it is, take it to the shop and have them check the problem out before something leaves you stranded or catches fire from too much heat.Locked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??
if it sounds like a %26quot;clunk%26quot; sound then it might be your bearings, but if it is a different sound. it might be your caliper, and you might need new roders [sp?] becuase that would mean your caliper is lose and its rubbing onto your roders and wearing them down. someone just had the same problem with their car.Locked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??
A bad wheel bearing, a brake caliper, and if a front wheel drive a constant velocity joint (CV joint) can cause this grinding sound....most likely you have a dry worn out wheel bearing though.Locked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??
In either even you should pull the wheel and inspect.. cuz either problem is gonna get you in deep CaCa eventually...

either is a pretty quick fix... though not cheap.. even if you have to replace the spindle... neither is a hard fix.. anyone that can work on a car can fix it in about an hour even if they are relativly a newbie...Locked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??
one way is to jack up car put a shovel under front wheel and see if any movement in wheel' but the best bet is to take off wheel and check out bearingsLocked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??
Jack up the car, spin the wheel and see if you can spin it by hand. If you can, pump the brakes, with it jacked up, and then get out and try to spin it by hand and see if there is any difference.

I would think that a locked up caliper wouldn't allow you to spin the wheel freely, so if you can spin the wheel while jacked up, and in neutral obviously, you will be able to hear the bad bearing, if that is in fact what it is.

    Anyhow, good luck.

How do you get use to 100mm wheels on in-line skates after having 80mm wheels?

I have been in line skating for years. Completed around 6 in line marathons and wanted to upgrade my skates from my previous Salomon (that they do not make anymore :( ). I bought K2 with 100mm wheels and they are so uncomfortable in the boot not to mention I can not skate smoothly/at ease. What do I do? I am looking to just change the wheels and bearing in my old skates these are so awkward for me- any suggestions? Does the 100mm get better, I am a worse skater with these? Do I go to a smaller wheel size? How do you get use to 100mm wheels on in-line skates after having 80mm wheels?
I bought a new pair of Salomon Vitesse III's after Salomon quit making them and a mail order store was closing them out. Salomons fit me better than K2s or Rollerblades. Second best in the fit for my foot shape (a bit wide) are the Rollerblades, then the narrower K2s.

Not much you can do with the fit. Unfortunately, the frames for the 100mm wheels probably have 7 1/2%26quot; between the mounting holes and your Salomons (if they were the upper models) probably have the older 6 1/2%26quot; spacing. If you can find some mounting slots on the frame that are witin the possible adjustment of the boots, you could mount the new frames to your Salomon boots.

My next skates may be the Bont SemiRace (http://www.bont.com/index.htm), *IF* they fit my feet well.

If the boots are biting you around the ankles, you can try EZ-fit booties (http://www.ezeefitsports.com/booties.htm They add neoprene padding around the ankle bones.

The more stable you were on your old skates, the less learning you will need to do on the 100s.

First, make sure that the frames are positioned correctly. You should be able to adjust them both at the heel and ball of the foot.

Ideally, they should extend about the same amount in front and behind the boot. Some frames have multiple slots for positioning them.

Next adjust the frame at the heel so that you have neutral balance from side to side. They should be easy to stand with the wheels straight up and you should be able to roll the ankles either inward or outward a bit.

Last, adjust the front of the frame to be approximetly aligned with the space between you big and second toe.

That should leave you with skates that want to stay up.

The 100s will be tippier and you may need to tighten up your boots a little more to compensate at first.

You could put the wheels from your old skates (assuming that they are 80mm or 84mm) on the larger frames to get used to being a little higher off the ground.

I thought it was the transmission, but it's the wheel bearing?

My car, an automatic, didn't seem to change into the 5th gear. I took it to Aamco this morning to have the transmission checked out, and I fully expected they would tell me I need to have my transmission repaired or replaced.

Instead, they said it's the wheel bearing and that my transmission is just fine. My questions are:

    1. How much will this cost me, ball park figure? My car is a 1997 BMW 528.

    2. Is it possible that a wheel bearing can make the car feel and sound like it's not changing gears?I thought it was the transmission, but it%26039;s the wheel bearing?
    1. Between $500 to $800. These are sealed bearings and must be hydraulically pressed in.

    2. Yes, the noise they will generate will make it sound as if the last gear has not engaged.

Get this done ASAP as the heat generated by the bad bearing will cause other parts to be damaged. Example, the lugs will break off when you try to remove the lug nuts to change the tire.I thought it was the transmission, but it%26039;s the wheel bearing?
    1. labor wise id charge you 3.0 hrs for a front bearing

and 3.5hrs for a rear. not including 1.0 hr diagnosis time.

    2. if you see the rpm's dip when they normally would in 5th gear, then your trans is fine.

How to confirm if the wheel bearing needs a replacement?

Thinking that it's the tyre's noise, I changed my tyres. I was later told that it's the wheel bearing problem. I took a second opinion from another mechanic, but was told there's no problem with the wheel bearing. Can anyone advise?

Jack up the car and release the parking brake ( make sure all the other wheels are blcoked to prevent rolling). Use safety jacks also. Spin the tire and listen for bearing noise. It usually sounds like roller blades rolling on the ground. If you hear that noise it is time to replace the bearings. You might want to check the tranny if this does not help. How to confirm if the wheel bearing needs a replacement?

Lift the wheel off the ground using a trolley jack or similar, and check for play in the wheel, top to bottom or side to side with the steering lock on. If there is some movement then you could have a worn bearing.

If you hear noise from that wheel like a grinding or metallic rubbing sound too its highly likely you could have a worn wheel bearing.

www.advanceautoparts.comWhere can i buy a replacement wheel bearing for a 2001 honda civic? and how much do they cost?
Auto parts stores used to carry those things. Try the autoparts store first. If they don't have it, you can remove the old bearing and bring it in to a bearing distributer's customer service desk. They probably carry them.

If all else fails, go to the Honda dealer parts department. The bearing will cost more, ($50?) but you will probabaly get the right part the first time.

Replacing the front wheel bearing requires removing the wheel, then the brake caliper must be lossened and relocated, then remove the brake rotor. Then you must remove the wheel hub, which requires a large metric socket that most shade tree mechanics don't have.

This will expose the bearing. The bearing must be pulled from the hub using a bearing puller. Then replaced.

When you put everything back together, make sure you get the torque settings right, especially the nut that holds the wheel hub in place.Where can i buy a replacement wheel bearing for a 2001 honda civic? and how much do they cost?
This bearing must be pressed out, and the new one in, with special service tools. Your cheapest option is to grab a complete steering knuckle from a salvage yard. Try to be sure the car wasn't hit on that side and spin the hub briskly while holding the knuckle: if you hear/feel grinding, the bearing's no good. If you're handy, you can swap the knuckle yourself. Just be sure to torque the axle nut correctly, or you'll harm the bearing. Get a wheel alignment afterward.Where can i buy a replacement wheel bearing for a 2001 honda civic? and how much do they cost?

  • Front Hub/Wheel Bearing on 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question?

I have a 1999 Sunfire with a 2.2 engine automatic transmission. The front driver wheel bearing/hub is beginning to squeal - How hard is this to change? Is there any specific information that I need to know before doing it?Front Hub/Wheel Bearing on 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question?
The front hub assm. is very easy to change. After getting the wheel off remove the spindle nut (the large nut in the center of the hub). The disconnect the ABS wires ( if equiped). Now the only thing left is to remove the mounting bolts. You must be carful when reinstalling the mounting bolts because if the bolts are over tightened the backing plate will crush the bearing and before you know it you will be replacing it all over again.Front Hub/Wheel Bearing on 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question?
not hard, you should clean the rust off the knuckle before installing new one and watch out for wheel speed sensor if equiped, you might have to remove it but thats not a big dealFront Hub/Wheel Bearing on 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question?
First of all usually the Hub doesn't make a squealing noise, should sound like a low humming at first then becomes a louder grinding noise...Do these test for me...whichever wheel you think it is...jack it up and see if you can move the tire from side to side or either up and down...if the hub is bad the tire will feel loose...If it is OK, the the squeal might be coming from your brake pads..You have a wear indicator that lets you know it is time to change your brake pads..Look for grooves cut into you rotor...If you need more help email me back..

Is this a bad wheel bearing?

My car shakes pretty bad when I'm driving. Its more of a wobble at 20/30 mph, but its more of a violent shaking at 40/50/60 mph. I jacked the front end up and shook the tires back and forth and it was a little loose. Not much, but there was some %26quot;leeway%26quot; with a faint knocking sound. Now, Im pretty sure the tire was the only thing moving, not the tie rod (thats the only thing i could see without taking the tire off). Is there anything else that could be the culprit besides the wheel bearing? If so, how can you find out?Yes it does. When I'm on the expressway going 55-60 mph, I'll try to keep it within that range or else if I let off the gas its tends to shakes slightly more. It seems as if I keep my foot on the gas, then it wont be as bad of a vibration as if i would let off. Is it a pain to change out the bearing yourself?

http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y279/championvette/Lillian/?action=view%26amp;current=P4280135.flvIs this a bad wheel bearing?
Number one you should do that test with the tire on to give you more leverage. Number two the should with the tire on support the lower control arm and load it with all the vehicle weight. The grab the tire top and bottom and do the same wiggle type test as you did for the wheel bearing and tie rod ends. The trouble you are describing sound more like a tire with a separated belt or possibly a C/V joint that is sticking. With both front wheels off the ground have someone start the car and pull in drive. Have them release the brakes and you look at both front tires. They should be smooth with no big bumps or side ways movement in them. If they have movement one way or the other it could be the tires or possibly a bent rim. If all seems good then you could have an axle shaft sticking. You will need to go to the repair shop for this one must likely. Is this a bad wheel bearing?

I believe the frt bearing on an Escape is a hub type bearing and requires disassmbly of the brake system to replace..Shoulbe 1-11/2 hours at most for one side..If you are changing the complete rear axle housing I would expect about 4 hours..If just the center section ..about an hour and 1/2How many %26quot;mechanic hours%26quot; should be charged?

    Wheel Bearings?

How do you change the wheel bearing in a 1999 ford Escort front wheel drive,is it easy or are they pressed on and have to be serviced somewhere.Wheel Bearings?
Well you need the special tools to do the work. Such as a big inpack wrench. A Slap-hammper with wheel adapter to put the fub apart. Bearing puller. And the proper tools to put it back together. Otherwise the drive axle could damage. And you need the tools to remoce the races. And installing tool or a press with the proper dies. The are best done in a shop with right tools. There are some model you hap to replace whole unit. The there is a real safety question. Cause you hap to take presure off the a fram.Wheel Bearings?
if i'm not mistaken, the front end bearings are part of the hubs, meaning that they are pressed in the hubs. U have to remove the rotors, and also remove the steering knuckles. then send the steering knucles to a machine shop to have the bearings replaced.Wheel Bearings?

    Rear wheel bearing?

can any1 give me instructions on how to change a rear wheel bearing on my 1996 pontiac voyager minivan?Rear wheel bearing?
    Pontiac makes a minivan?

    ADDED:

    It's a complete hub assembly. +/- $80.00 each.

and just unbolts from the rear axle.

    ADDED:

    Rear drum.

    Remove the wheel.

    Remove the brake drum.

Remove the bolts from the BACK side of the axle.

It may be a pain in the @$$ to slide out as it probably rusted it's self in the axle tube.

Then reverse the procedure.Rear wheel bearing?
1st off you're gonna need to buy the whole hub assembly not just the bearing. that will cost around 85ish

is it disc or drum brakes? probably disc. so:

    1st: take off your tire

2nd: remove your brake caliper assembly (theres two bolts holding your caliper together on the back side one on top one on bottom and if i remember right its an allen bit)

    3rd: remove your brake rotor

4th: remove your drive axle nut

5th: the hub is held into the housing by three tabs each with a bolt in it, the front part of the hub (that you can spin) itself has three holes in it, THERE IS ONLY ONE HOLE OUT OF THE THREE THAT THE BOLT WILL COME OUT OF ITS CALLED THE %26quot;PEEKHOLE%26quot;!!! so you will need to spin the front part of the hub so it lines up with the bolts each time you take one out

6th: slide the hub out of its housing (make sure your whole rear end is level it will make removing the hub easier and not doing so could damage the splines on your axle, etc...

7th: put your new hub back on and redo all this crap

oh make sure to be careful with your brake caliper assembly when your ready to put your caliper back on your going to need to depress the plunger back inside the caliper with a 3 inch %26quot;c clamp%26quot; also make sure you dont be too rough with the caliper because you dont want to mess up the sensor position.

How Can I tell if my front wheel bearing is bad on a 1992 ford explorer and how do i change it?

It is on the front passenger side and i have aftermarket lockin hubs put on a year ago. There seems to be a rubbing noise coming from that side and when i lock in the four wheel drive it gets worse any ideas? How Can I tell if my front wheel bearing is bad on a 1992 ford explorer and how do i change it?
Sometimes the manual locking hubs can make noise. My warns were making more of a clicking sound and I look the lock ring off the outside of the outer axle and this took care of the noise. That ring is not really necessary because, for there to be a problem the axle would have to slide out a full 6 inches to disengage the hub, if this happens you have something far worse to worry about. A bearing noise will be a rough or %26quot;roar%26quot; noise at approx. 30mph and up. It may seem to go away at higher speeds, but it is usually masked by wind and tire noise. How Can I tell if my front wheel bearing is bad on a 1992 ford explorer and how do i change it?
it would be a good idea to take your hub apart, see how much dirt and debree is inside, when you lock the hub in it moves internaly, and may be grinding up dirt. How Can I tell if my front wheel bearing is bad on a 1992 ford explorer and how do i change it?
to check a wheel beering jack the vehicle up so the tire is off the ground put a jack stand under vehicle for safety grab the tire one hand on top one hand on the bottom rock the tire if you have play in the wheel then you need to check out wheel bearing(don't rock tire side to side).Take apart hub inspect the hub assembly also inspect the axle

How do you know if the wheel bearing need to be change?

i have jeep cherokee 1999How do you know if the wheel bearing need to be change?
It will usually sqeal or grind, but if you suspect that a wheel bearing is bad, jack the wheel off the ground then put one hand on each side of the whell and try to wiggle it on the axle, repeat the same top and bottom. If you feel ANY play or clicking, the axle bearing is bad. Also spin the wheel by hand (easier if it's a front wheel on a rear wheel drive or the back wheel on a front wheel drive), again if you hear or feel grinding or any other strange noise it's probably a bad bearing.

Don't be fooled by dragging brake shoes or pads, they frequently have some contact with the drum or disk but the sound emanates from further out on the wheel. To pinpoint the source of the sound put a piece of plastic tube in your ear and hold the other end close to the axle or wheel bearing.

A bad wheel bearing is dangerous and could result in complete loss of the wheel at any time...How do you know if the wheel bearing need to be change?
I know I am a girl, but I know a little about this. I have had way too many cars that I have had to change this on.

First, the car will usually make a grinding nose that sounds like it is coming out of the wheel. Also, when you are driving, if you turn the steering wheel to the left and the noise stops, then the right wheel bearing needs replacing. If you turn the wheel to the right and the noise stops, then it the left wheel bearing. Simple enough to figure out which one. But, not simple to change out. It all depends on the car.How do you know if the wheel bearing need to be change?

mate if you've fitted the sensor correctly then you will need to clear the logged fault, there is a 14 pin diag plug under the bonnet, left hand side as you look at the engine, you have to bridge to terminals then pump the brake pedal 30 times in a minute, im sorry i cant remember the terminal numbers, if you pop in to toyota garage and ask a tec to do it they will pop out and clear it for you, give him a diver and your both happy. magicHow do you get the ABS light to go out on a 1994 toyota celica, I recently changed a front wheel bearing,?

The ABS light is for the Anti-Lock Brake System. I am not sure how the 94 Celia's System is set up. Did you do the work yourself or did someone else do the work for you? If you did the work make sure you have reconnected all the electrical harnesses or any wires that you may have removed to change the bearing.

If someone else did the work, take the car back and explain that the light came on right after they did the job and they should look at it without charging anything.

Either way, if you cannot get that light to go out, you need to get your car to a shop. If your anti-lock brake light is on that means that your system is not working right and it needs to be worked on to get your brakes working right.

When changing the wheel bearings you may have moved the sensor at the front axle. Check to see if it is aligned properly with the cogged ring around the axle. you need a bearing puller, it has hooks that go on the back of the bearing and a threaded center piece that you hook a wrench/ beaker bar onto and it pushes on the axle end to pull the bearing out. they sell these at sears but they are not really cheap. you also need a press to put the new bearing back on. the press is really expensive or if you can fabricate a bottle jack w/ bearing sleeve you can press it back on.

or you can try to heat it up by a blow torch then use a socket and hammer to knock it out.

I'm not 100% sure, but there should be a bearing cap in the center of the brake rotor/hyb.Use a slip-joint pliers to remove cap, there will be a cotter pin going through the slotted nut.Remove pin, remove nut,rotor/hub should just about fall off.Remove inner and outer bearings, clean and reinstall new bearings with fresh grease. This is the normal procedure for a rear wheel drive car, yours is front wheel drive I assume, might be different. The library should have a repair manual if this wrong.Have fun.Can you please give me some advice on how to change out wheel bearings?
A quick search at Advance shows they sell them as a bearing and hub assembly...the cheaper of the two there goes for $93...I don't know why you took off the control arm and ball joint, all you have to do is remove the brake caliper and axle nut (very tight), slip the whole hub off, and put the new one on...tightening the axle nut is very important. Oh yes, the four bolts you mention should be the holding bolts for the strut assembly, that's where it actually attaches to the suspension.

How much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?

I bought a honda civic coupe recently .

yesterday i was driving my mom back from work , and as i was parking , i turned my wheels and i could hear a screeching or shreiking sound coming from the Right Front Wheels .

i did some research on Yahoo answers and it seems that

this could have been a defective wheel bearing or a cv joint .

i called the service center and the manager told me it could be the mud thing making that sound , and he adviced me to check tire pressure . So i did and seemed the air pressure was low on the Right front wheel and put some air in . But the sound didn't %26quot;go away%26quot; . it sounds like 2 thin metal pieces sliding each other ( it's a high pitched shreiking/ screeching sound) i dn't understand what's going on . I dn't have a job right now , looking for a job , should i take it to the honda service center where i bought it ( will it be covered ) , or any service center ...

I was wondering if that exactly is the problem , and how much will it cost me to fix itHow much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?
I don't think is the cv joints or the bearings, since the bearings will sound (while you're driving) like you are driving a pick-up truck with huge wheels on it, (you know the sound they make)

And if it's the cv joints it will only and ONLY when you turn to either side (clack, clack, clack noise), if it's screeching noise it's the brake pads, check to see if the disks are smooth, that could be the problem, if they 're not change the pads, that should fix the problem!, BUT if they tell you to change the cv joints it's about $70 labor, plus the parts, each side, if you don;t have the money just tell them that you want the affected side (even though the Honda service they'll try to tell you you need to do both) DO ONLY THE ONE, then when you have the money do the other one, i don't think is the bearings...

But whatever you do don't take to the dealer it's gonna cost you a lot!!!, if it's not under warranty off-course.

What you can do to make sure it's not the cv-joints is this:

Turn the wheels to one side and look inside (the other side where you put the nuts that hold the tire) and you'll see a large piece of rubber like a cup, that's called the %26quot;boot%26quot; they'll have a metal ring that holds it in place, if that's loose or you see grease all over it, that's the problem, but like i said before i think is your brake pads. GOOD LUCK!!!How much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?
Replace wheel bearings...cheap - CV Joints...very expensive, Tonto! How much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?
If it's under warranty, you ought to be covered. It sounds more like a wheel bearing than the CV joint.

Check the rubber boot between the wheel and the transaxle. Look around the boot as well. These things can get a hole and throw grease out. Look for a pattern of grease around the boot. If there is a hole, yes it's the CV joint and it' gonna be expensive. I've never done a Honda CV, but you're looking at $350 +

You described the sound as %26quot;something dropped and dragged? %26quot;. A wheel bearing would usually make a growling sound, gradually get worse, and have to be really bad to lock up the wheel- unusual.

Many BMWs with disc brakes in the rear had a separate parking brake which was a drum brake inside the brake disc. If it's rear discs, look for the parking brake cable. If the cable is attached to the brake caliper, never mind (I assume you've tried removing the caliper)

If the cable goes inside the backing plate behind the wheel, you might try removing the brake disc and look at the small drum brake behind it.

Replacing rear wheel bearings requires too many special tools and experience. I believe it'd be Independent rear suspension? You may be able to remove the swing arm and take it to the shop (save towing). Call ahead first - they may prefer to do it on the car.

Cars with solid axles, the rear axle and backing plate usually is held on by four bolts on end of axle. It varies- repair manual helpful for that kind of thing. How do you change the wheel bearings?

If you do not know how to do it do not do it yourself. Doing it wrong could cause a horrible accident. Save the money, there are shops on most bases that will give him a good deal. How do you change the wheel bearings?
The wheel bearings on the rear of your 2001 BMW 325i are pressed off and on.

You will need a hydraulic press for this operation.

It still is a DIY job. I suggest purchasing new wheel bearing(s) from http://mibearings.com (fill out the form on the right)

Once you get your new wheel bearing, you can take your old hub (with the old bearing) and the new bearing into a local repair shop. They will press out the old bearing and press in the new for much less than a complete job.

You can then take the hub with the new bearing and put it back into your BMW.

The rest is just wrench work.

First thing, sign up on www.rx7club.com and download the 86-88 Factory Service Manual in the Second Generation section (it's free!). The whole process is outlined in proper detail, with tolerances and proper tightening torque. If you have any questions, hit search, type in %26quot;wheel bearings%26quot; on the RX7 club and you'll find an answer.

Last, toss the Haynes manual into a nearby fireplace. If you get stuck on it, let me know!

I'd recommend getting a service manual, not the Haynes or Chilton type specifically, but a factory one or equivalent. I bought a service manual for my wife's PT from www.promanuals.net it was about 25 bucks or so. I had to call though, they don't have every manual listed on their website. But the number is a 800 one and they have a huge catalog. It came in about 3 or 4 days.Need to change a bearing on a pt cruiser?
Take off your wheel, remove your brake caliper and remove the brake disc. You may have a metal hub in the center that you have to take off to access the bolt. Pull off your disc and you will have access to your wheel bearing.

If you turn the wheel while driving and the noise changes, yes, I agree, its probably a wheel bearing, which is sold as a hub assembly. Be best to have someone diagnosis it for you to make sure what side its coming from, as they are expensive and you might not want to do both if only one is bad. Costs can vary, labor is usually around 100 dollars and the part can be around 150-250, per side, depending on the quality of the part, remember, cheaper isn't always better. I agree, if you decide to do it in yourself, it would be a lot cheaper, but shops like all businesses mark-up the part , selling parts at cost will put a shop out of business real quick, Good luckCan anybody know how much it will cost me to change my both front wheel bearing?
Front wheel bearing jobs for that car could run about $300 parts and labor for one side. The wheel bearings usually cost about 90 bucks each. Can anybody know how much it will cost me to change my both front wheel bearing?
You need to take it to someone who knows what they are listening to before you waste your money on parts that don't fix the problem. Thinking you know what the problem is can get expensive. Can anybody know how much it will cost me to change my both front wheel bearing?
That sounds like a bad wheel bearing to me.

You can purchase new wheel bearings for the front at http://mibearings.com/paypalparts/513137

    They are $84 a piece.

Labor (unless you are going to do it yourself) is from $70 to $150 an hour and it generally takes about an hour for one bearing.

    I hope that helps!

How to change the inner and outer wheel bearing on a 1955 chevy?

will to find a manual for a 1955 not going to be easy, and we know its the front bearings as there not an inter and out on the back, just one pressed on bearing, and there's not caliper or rotor as this car was not offered with anything but 4 wheel drum brakes.

sorry guys just in a bad mood, and if you don't know what your talking about, will ill just leave it at that.....

    rickie m

got it for the most part right, and from 1953 to 1964 used the same spindle's for the most part, so to change to the newer type bearings is an easy job, and as rickie m said he used the 64 chevy bearings, the 63 %26amp; 64 chevy was the first years for the newer style of bearings and the 64s are easyer to get.

as rickie m said you may have to back the brakes off a bit to get the drum off and youll need a brake spoon or long flat head screw driver and youll have to lift on the tool you use so that your turning the self a-juster off some to get the drum off, youll have to have the rease pressed in on the old drums, should cost you about $20.oo for both to be done + cost of the bearings and the bearings will come with the new rease's, make sure you pack the bearings with grease, and make sure you replace the seals on the back of the drums as well, and when your putting them back on the car make sure you dont over tighten them, over tighting them down will cause them to burn out and fail.

good luck with this job its an easy one, and make sure you have some rags around as this job will get grease everywhere on you lol.

If your asking about the front wheel, jack up, remove the wheel, unbolt the caliper and the caliper mounting bracket and set a side. With a small screwdriver take tap tap the dust cover off the middle of the rotor. Once removed take the cotter pin out and loosen the nut in the middle. The rotor should come off. But slide the rotor part way off and get the outter bearing out and then slide back on and put the Nut back on the spindle. Once you have the nut back on slide the rotor down til it hits the nut and push it back and pull it out hard til it knocks the inner bearing out.How to change the inner and outer wheel bearing on a 1955 chevy?
very easy, remove dust cap, then cotter pin, then big nut,try to pull off,if it feels stuck, then back the brakes off a little, then it will come rite off,,,,those wheel bearings, are the round ball bearing type,,,and tend to go out a lot,,,on my 57 which is same setup,,,i used front drums, and inner and outer bearing's from a 64 chev,,cause they have the modern roller type wheel bearing's,and are much easier to work with, and more dependable...

Need to change a front wheel-bearing on a 97 Chevy Cavalier. The bearing is in a pre-assembled hub. I removed the three bolts holding the hub to the steering knuckle but couldn't get the bearing out because it seemed to be rusted in there. I tried using Seafoam (rust remover) and that didn't seem to change anything... and I have pretty well pried and hammered at it with small tools. What would a shop use to get it off? Get you a Hanes Manual, they tell you everything you need to know. It isn't that hard of a job, but you will need to know the proper steps to follow.

    I do know on my Scion TC that the %26quot;Hub nut%26quot; has been dented into a slot on the spindle.(A groove down the threads on the spindle, to lock the nut in place) If you don't bend that dent back out with a punch you will ruin the threads on your spindle, resulting in having to buy another CV joint.     At many auto parts stores you can buy a Haynes or Chilton's do-it-yourself manual for your model car, with step-by-step instructions, and basic explanations at the beginning of each chapter. If it is not in stock, you can order it online by searching on %26quot;auto repair manuals%26quot; on Yahoo search. In the front is a section on %26quot;Troubleshooting%26quot; that guides you step-by-step to find causes of most engine malfunctions based on the car's symptoms. Whether you do the work yourself or not, it helps you make informed decisions and not be taken advantage of, and to not feel so %26quot;in the dark.%26quot;

db667089 says: you can check http://www.alldatadiy.com. For about the same price as a Haynes or Chilton's repair manual, you can have online access (for a whole year) to model specific info for your particular vehicle. This is the same info that repair shops use. They have great wiring schematics/diagrams.

Also, for about $15 for a one-month subscription, you can get the factory manual, downloadable (careful! Mine was about 500 pages!) or viewable, at http://eAutoRepair.com.

Also, many people recommend autozone.com's free online manuals.

2002 Chevy Malibu. My mechnical husband wants to know how to change a front wheel bearing on a 2002 Malibu.?

remove wheel and tire, remove caliper and mounting bracket, if equipped, remove the axle nut, remove three bolts that hold the hub on the the spindle. It's not hard if you have the right tools. You'll need a large 6-point metric socket to take off the axle nut. It's big, around 36mm. I hope you have an air good air compressor and a good 1/2%26quot; drive impact gun because the torque spec on the axle nut is 284 lb ft. It will take a lot to get it off. If you don't have an impact gun, you might be able to get it off with a breaker bar and a long pipe.2002 Chevy Malibu. I need to change the front wheel bearing on a 95 Ford four wheel drive. How do I get the hub assembly apart?

Bear with me its been a year and a half since I did this.

Truck jacked up and tire off.

    remove hub 3-6 bolts

    pull off outer cap

there is a large spring clip in a groove in outer hub wall . Dig around with small screw driver you will find .it once this is out the inner hub will come out.

You may need to reach in and remove any c-clips on Axel . As well as a large washer with holes in it .

Now you should see a large flat washer looking thing with 4 hole in it. Get you hub socket and remove it . The rotor and hub should pull off.

remove seal and bearings . Pound out races with brass /wood drift and replace in reverse.

When you get to the large 4 hole nut tighten till rotor will not turn and back off. I put tire on and tighten till there is no side to side movement . And tire turns. You will want to check hub after first ride to see if to hot and readjust in week or so .

I recommend you get a manual. And You should join www.ford-trucks.com its free the 88-97 forum guys can help you with every nut and bolt . tell em %26quot;lost%26quot; sent youI need to change the front wheel bearing on a 95 Ford four wheel drive. How do I get the hub assembly apart?

You don't need a press to take the 4X4 locking hub apart. It's not that hard to do but you may need a special socket to get the large nut inside the hub off. Some parts stores rent special tools like this if you need it. I would get a manual or take it in if you're not sure what you're doing. If you don't put it back together properly you could have your front wheel fly off when your going down the road. Then you're going to have a large repair bill.

on a 93 caravan it is a unserviceable bearing witch means that you can not repack the bearing, you need to replace it. to do this you need to press the bearing out of the hub. if you havent done one its pretty difficult and you may not want to do this on your own. the ball joint will need to be removed from the knuckle, the CV shaft needs to come out and you need a special tool to press the bearing from the hub. you may need to take it to a pro.How do you change the left front wheel bearing on a 93 caravan?
well its a good habit 2 do bearings when u do brakes since u have it all apart anyways, remove tire..remove ur brake caliper,do this by removing the 2 hex or normal bolts attached on the backside of the caliper...remove the center cap on ur disk brake...remove the locking ringor cover by removing the cotter pin(u will c a nut bhind that)remove the nut and the bearing will b exposed 2u...turn the nut off and ur bearing is next...give ur disk brake a pull with 2 hands and everything should just drop out 4 u...b sure 2 grease it all up b4 u put it all back together and set ur bearing so that when u spin the disk brake that it travels freely...adios..

How would I change the wheel bearing on my 1993 Saturn SL2?

I am pretty much a diy guy for everything. I slid my car into a curb a long time ago and replaced a lot of parts. Unfortunately my wheel bearing was off, and caused the front passenger wheel to go completely bald down to wires. I, like a fool, decided maybe it would be good to have a %26quot;professional%26quot; that a friend referred me to handle this one. I like doing my own work so that I know what all I did, and I can usually trace it back. This guy was very unprofessional, called me angrily saying he needed more money because apparently the half-shaft for an automatic is different than a manual (my car). He said that would need to be replaced, and a spindle (which should've came with it, as it came from a junkyard). Anyways, I continued this foolish game. When it was all finally done, he brought the car to me (the shop was just down the street), and I drove him home. I noticed the wheel was making a rubbing noise, and he said it was nothing, and it should go away. I drove it around for a while, but I have a different car that I had been driving instead (the a/c works). Months later, I decided to drive the saturn around and it is still making this rubbing noise. One of the motor mounts had been rotted, and I replaced it, which helped a lot, but the wheel is still making this rubbing noise. I am pretty sure it is not rubbing against anything, but it is hard to tell because the %26quot;professional%26quot; put the tire back on with an impact wrench and I can't get the wheel off. Any ideas? If it is the wheel bearing...how would I replace it? I believe they are sealed bearings, but I'm not sure if it needs to be pressed out or if I could hammer it out and a new one in.How would I change the wheel bearing on my 1993 Saturn SL2?
if your going to change the bearing, i,ll tell you the way i do it. i pound the old bearing out and i put the new bearing in the freezer and when i,am ready for it, it will slip right in. steel will shrink when they are cold and expand when it warms up. buy the bearing, put it in the freezer for about a day or 2, pound the bearing out, take the new bearing and put it in a ice chest and when your ready for it, it should slip right in where the old 1 came out. i did that several times. How would I change the wheel bearing on my 1993 Saturn SL2?
Buy a repair manual for the car and do what it says.

How to change drivers side wheel bearing on 89 Toyota celica?

its making loud noise u can move the c.v. axle up and down need to know the ez way to remove itHow to change drivers side wheel bearing on 89 Toyota celica?
There is no easy way. The hub is pressed into the bearing, which is pressed into the spindle housing. Unless you have the tools to properly remove them without removing the whole housing from the car, dont try it. These tools range from $350 to $600. If you want to break loose your lower ball joint, your tie rod end, and unbolt the housing from the strut (possibly screwing up your alignment) just to take it to a press where you probably won't be able to set it up anyway, have at it. My advise is save time and money and take it to your local shop.

How to change rear wheel bearing on a 2004 nissan sentra?

I would suggest you take to a shop because you need lots of tools. Some vehicles have the bearing in hub that you replace as a unit, and others you have to press out and in the bearings. If you want to try, purchase a repair manual at your local auto parts store and see what you need.

  • Is it hard to change one wheel bearing (front)?

I have a hyundai elantra that i just bought and it makes a loud noise, a mechanic saw it said it's the wheel bearing on the front right side.

they charge a lot, im just a poor college kid. I can't even pay for my lunch... so this fat mechanic wanted all this money.

How hard is it to change it? can someone guide me.

I don't know anything about cars but im good at following instructions.

Hyundai 98 elantra, it's a small car.Is it hard to change one wheel bearing (front)?
Best thing to do is go to an auto parts store and buy a Haynes shop manual for your particular model/year of car (they are not expensive), and see what the process is for taking them off. I have a rear-wheel drive car, so I dont know how much different it is, but the only thing I found difficult was that the bolt is quite tight and it helps to have a very large socket wrench or a breaker bar. You can probably buy a bearing for $30-40, maybe even less.Is it hard to change one wheel bearing (front)?
Without specialized better than average 1/2%26quot; metric sockets, 16%26quot; ratchet or breaker bar, three finger 5 ton puller, pitman arm puller, jack stands, and a one pound maul you'd be better off going hungry and paying the %26quot;fat man%26quot;. Call all over town and get the best price. E-mail and I'll fully explain how to go about this. Without the necessary tools you're sunk.

You can rent for free the two pullers at Auto Zone but you still need the sockets, wratchet or breaker bar jack-stands and hammer which you'll have to borrow, steal or come up with.

The best two places in town to buy the wheel bearing hub assembly is NAPA (SKF) or Carquest (Timkin). Don't even think about buying an off-shore wheel bearing for $10.00 less, they're junk.Is it hard to change one wheel bearing (front)?
It's not hard changing out the wheel bearing as long as u got the required tools.

Takes time.Is it hard to change one wheel bearing (front)?
You don't have the tools to do it. Main tool you need is a press.

    Changing wheel bearing?? help pls:)?

hey id like to change both the wheel bearings on the front of my holden barina 2008. can someone point me in a direction and how much are they usually. im from australia :)Changing wheel bearing?? help pls:)?
I believe your car is front wheel drive based on the Daewoo.Loosen both front wheels jack the car up,support the body with blocks or trestles and remove the jack.Slacken the big nut on the end of the CV Joint.Remove the brake calliper (no need to disconnect the hydraulic brake pipe, just support the calliper)..Undo the track rod end and the top and bottom ball joint nuts and break the tapered connections.Remove the CV joint nut and tap the CV joint back through the hub and remove the hub.On a bench and in a vice remove the bearing by using a steel drift to knock out the inner tracks.Refit the new bearings by using a phosphorous bronze drift if you don't have a press. You can use the old tracks to start the bearing in the hub and then evenly tap the bearing home.Refitting is a reversal of removalChanging wheel bearing?? help pls:)?
if it is front wheel drive it is not a do-it-yourself job as it needs a 15 ton press to get the old bearings off and the new ones on, if it is rear wheel drive then the bearings are adjustable but you still need a press to get the old race off and the new one on, there is no way a 2008 car would need new bearings unless something catastrophic has happened, they last 160000KmChanging wheel bearing?? help pls:)?
unless you are a mechanic, its better to pay for someone to do it for you, and car bearings and semi expensive, labor generally isnt, but they usually go by hour so its up to you. srry this isnt really helpful, but ive done bearings on a couple things other than cars, and its tuff.

  • How hard is it to change a wheel bearing (hub) on a car?

my car is a 1997 toyota camry 4 cylinder i think i will buy the part off ebayHow hard is it to change a wheel bearing (hub) on a car?
This wheel bearing will need to be pressed in and out.

You will need a hydraulic press for this job. I suggest purchasing the part from the internet, and either taking it to a local repair shop and having them do the work, or rent a hydraulic press. I would buy it from a reputable company such as http://mibearings.com if you are going to purchase the part offline. How hard is it to change a wheel bearing (hub) on a car?
the hub is quite easy to remove and install but the bearing will need to be fitted with the use of a hydraulic press. How hard is it to change a wheel bearing (hub) on a car?
Lol why would you buy the part off ebay. Any local parts store will have this. It is not a do it yourself project as the bearing will need to be pressed in. You can get a bearing anywhere for 30 dollars. How hard is it to change a wheel bearing (hub) on a car?
On the scale of 1-5 i would give the wheel bearing job a 2. Your going to need a hammer, mid size punch and a good size chiesel in order to get the bearings out , the ideal thing would be a piece of 5/8 ' brass rod.you need to get the grease seals out first ,then the bearings, after the bearings are out you will need to knock out the race, they can be a little tricky to get out

How much does it cost to change the wheel bearing on a 1988 camaro v-6?

Less than $100 parts and labor. They have to take either the front or rear brake assembly off to remove it from the axle.

There is a ring that holds the bearings in place that is held in place with a %26quot;C%26quot; clip.

Any decent mechanic should be able to do the job in less than a hour.

Or you could do it for less than $50. You'll need the correct Chilton's repair manauls for your Camaro ($20). It will give you step by step instructions and pictures. The manual will help you do a lot more maintence on the car saving labor fees. It has saved hundreds of repair headaches, and payed for itself many times over. How much does it cost to change the wheel bearing on a 1988 camaro v-6?
