We were told that a rod bearing is bad in our engine and it will cost around $3,000 to repair. The oil has been changed every 3000 miles and the vehicle only has 87,000 miles on it. What is the best way to pull the engine for possible replacement or repair? The mechanic said we must have gotten a lemon because he's heard very little in the way of problems. Other problems we've had repaired consist of wheel bearing replacement 4 times, defective sliding door, coolant leak, air conditioning stopped working a week after warranty was up and air bag system malfunction. I had an extended warranty from GM on the motor only. We noticed a noise from the lifters and took it in for repair. It was supposedly repaired but one week after the repair, the rod bearing is damaged. Can anyone advise on how to proceed with this van?...short of a bonfire?Chevrolet Venture Van problems?
Doesn't your extended warranty cover this? 3K sounds high for a bearing replacement unless they are doing more than just that...I would check around for different shops to quote the job and see if it can be done without pulling the motor. You may have other problems with the motor once they get into the repair so it may not even be worth it to do. Maybe check around at dealers to see what they would give you for trade-in value in it's present condition. Some dealers like to do that because they can fix it at cost and make a profit on it if the van's in good shape otherwise. Weigh the trade-in value as is versus what it would be worth if you spent the money to fix it.Chevrolet Venture Van problems?
Mechanic sound like he's right, Lemon! Way to much Repair for a %26quot;van%26quot; with that low mileage. Lemon Law First Then Maybe %26quot;Bonfire%26quot; In Dealer's Lot?

Small question about a car noise?
I drive a 2001 Hyundai Elantra. Lately I've noticed a noise that seems to be coming from possibly the front driver's side wheel area. When I get to driving 20+ mph, it becomes like a humming-type noise that is more predominant when turning left, and seems to almost disappear when turning the wheel to the right. Any ideas on what it could be?
Another part to this question, is that would anyone know how I'd be able to check and see which bearing on the front is bad? What would I need to look for, so I don't go changing the good one by mistake?Small question about a car noise?
Hyundai front wheel bearings can be expensive and difficult to replace. they are sealed and non-serviceable. if you turn left and the noise gets louder usually that means its the right side. however it could also be a tire making the noise. start by jacking up the front end. grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock. pull at 12 and push at 6, and vise verse. if you feel play or looseness in that wheel that bearing is bad. look at the tires and see if there is uneven tread. this could also be causing the noise. also you could switch left front tire with right front tire to see if the noise moves. if so it's a tire. hope this helps.Small question about a car noise?
You always do both--same with brakes--you always do both. This is part of owning a car--maintenance is on going and you never wait till noises start or you could lose the whole car. get the bearings done soon--the spindle is probably being chewed down to the point where it will snap off and you won't have a very nice day after that.Small question about a car noise?

Why does my protege make this weird noise/vibration?
Ok, my 2001 mazda protege lx 2.0 has been making a weird noise and vibration lately. It is sort of like a loud hum, and can be deafening over 100 km/h. I thought perhaps it was just a wheel out of balance, so I switched the front passenger side wheel with the rear passenger side wheel, and same on the drivers side, and it helped the noise a bit. Before changing the tires around, I also had this crazy vibration that I could feel through the steering wheel. It seems to have lessened now that I rotated the tires.
A couple mechanics think it is the wheel bearing, but I don't see how it could be that, consider the car only has like 100,000 kms on it. Plus, switching the wheels around wouldn't have improved it then would it?
Other tire people think I just need to get my wheels balanced. Not sure on that yet, but plan to try it anyway perhaps.
The car still has its stock tires, which still have some usable tread on them, but need replacing soon anyway. Why does my protege make this weird noise/vibration?
Wow stock tires on a 7 year old car with 100km. Sounds to me like you have two problems, since it did improve but not go totally away after the rotation. Sounds like you have a tire issue and a wheel bearing issue. I would get it into a reputable repair facility and have a professional check it out.Why does my protege make this weird noise/vibration?
well heres a great test i learn many years ago working at goodyear... tire test one put car in drive but dont gaive gas juts let it roll feel anything.. bad wheel or tire..... now if you drive above 45 and you feel something either its a tire balance problem or a drive train problem.. id bet you have a bad tire or its out of balance which if you have not had done a few times with your tire is a real good chance shoul dbe rebalance every other time you rotate them.. tire wear down so the balance changes.. if your tires are wore the ride will change.. but for the noice could be a bearing going bad have you have the front end greased any or had the wheel bearing out to be grease... yo ucan check that by shaking the tire side to side with it on a jack if you feel much slack then its a good bet they about gone... and dont think about the miles so much its where it was drove and how it was drove and the right side of all cars is the first to so signs roads are built with a lean for water run off so the car leans to the right so waering out the right side of parts on everything.. having two peole tell you it might be the bearing now you have another it might be the bearing... been a tire guy 30 yrs your tires are almost 8 year old they bad and im thinking the front end has never been greased so the bearings are bad to sorrybig hair how old do i look

What causes a grabbing noise like after changing the front brake pads on a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan?
It was making like a grabbing noise ( don't know how to explain it) every time you stepped on the brakes. Replaced the front brake shoes (which was worn down and needed to be replaced) Took it for a test drive and now that noise is alot louder then what it was before. It is coming from the passenger front side. I noticed on that right side rotor passengers side it had some grooves in the rotor. Which means that the brakes been down to far. But anyway the new shoes should wear in where it shouldn't make any noise but still does. Got over 50 miles on the new brake shoes. Would the wheel bearing be going out on that side? That is my only thought now. What causes a grabbing noise like after changing the front brake pads on a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan?
There has been a rash of bad pads on the market recently. Some pads emit a gas when heated up just a little. Essentially Fart ing out between the pads and rotors making a horrible groan at very low speeds.

1986 Chevette - Good car?
I want to buy an 86 Chevette. It's got 98,000 clicks on it, and it's from the second owner. The two problems are that it needs a wheel bearing replaced, and a possible leak from the radiator. It's aircared and is a daily driver with regular oil changes.
how much would it be to fix these problems? Does this sound like a good buy? Any help would be appreciated.1986 Chevette - Good car?
The Chevette is the furthest thing from a good car.

What is the best way to line up the transmission on a FWD vehicle?
I changed my clutch and am having a bear of a time trying to line up the transmission to the engine (the splines that is), and placing the driveshafts into it at the sametime. Any reccomendations on how to do it? Its a Mazda 6 V6 manual if that helps (very similar drivetrain setup to the Ford Fusion, Contour, Mercury Milan, and Lincoln Zephyr if that helps) Is the best way to focus on getting the driveshafts in, and then pushing the tranny against the flywheel, and then turning the wheels to turn the spline on the tranny to match up with the engine. There are a total of 3 of us, two jacks, and a jackstand. Thanks! What is the best way to line up the transmission on a FWD vehicle?
is the transmission bell parallel to the back of the block? if it is at a slight angle (easy to do), it will cause the splines to bind. Get a few long bolts that thread into the engine block and cut the heads off to make guide pins to help hold the tranny in the proper position. What is the best way to line up the transmission on a FWD vehicle?
It sounds like your doing more work then necessary. First did you have an alignment shaft for when you put the clutch on the flywheel? If not, that is probably your most major problem with alignment. If you did, then try to slowly rotate the input shaft on the trans a little at a time till everything should go together smoothly. Good luck. By the way, don't put the CV's in, as its hard enough to move the tranny without extra things binding you up.What is the best way to line up the transmission on a FWD vehicle?
the last 2 have some good advice. lose the cv joints till the trans is bolted in and use some long guide bolts to help line it up. I also use a drift ( long tapered spike you might call a punch) to line up 2 corresponding holes in the trans and engine. I assume you had an alignment tool with the new clutch. What I think your biggest problem is, is a wear pattern formed on your input shaft splines. I ran into this problem and couldnt get the trans back in to save my life. and I had a lift and a trans jack. remove the trans so you can work on it and see what you are doing. when the engine is running it is putting stress on only one side of all the splines. If you look very carefully at the tip of every spline you should see or feel a sharp corner on one edge. the splines a re triangular one edge should be rounded and one shold be sharp. go around the shaft and file or gently grind off the sharp edge on every single spline. I did that and the trans practically fell in place the first time after i cleaned up the splines.

1998 Grand Cherokee 5.2 bearing issues?
I'm looking for some feedback on this:
I just purchased a used 98 grand cherokee with 84000 miles. Everything seems to be perfect on it but I hear that noise that changes pitch the faster you go. Like a friction coming from the back.
I went to the jeep dealership and had a mechanic take a ride with me and he said it sounded liek the wheel bearings. He said it would range ebtween 500 to 1000 dollar job depended on how long this ha dbeen going on.
I got the jeep for 6700$ after taxes which was a cash price. I did the blue book value of it and its close to 10,000. It really is in good condition except by that detail.
Can I go to the place i bought it from and have them fix it? Can I even legally request that since I bought it yesterday?
Any input would be appreciated.1998 Grand Cherokee 5.2 bearing issues?
the noise sounds like a wheel bearing. the jeep might have a dana 35 rear end. if it does then it is a fairly simple operation to change it . i have a dana 35 on my 83 amc/jeep eagle and
removed the axles myself.there should be 4 bolts holding the backing plate on. to access it you will have to remove all of the brake hardware including the brake lines off the wheel
cylinder and the e-brakes. now you should see the 4 bolts.
on the backside of the plate you will find the nuts. remove them, using a dead blow mallet(rubber) gently tap on the spindle till the shaft loosens up. then gently slide it out.
remember to replace both bearing at the same time.
if you don't have a bearing press then go to your favorite shop and have the bearing removed and your new ones installed. make sure you have a repair manual to refer to.
if you have any other jeep questions go to www.bulltear .com
